Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Chairman Christian Chukwu has turned 72nd today and wishes have continued to pour in for the legend from Nigerian football fans.

Christian Chukwu is a Nigerian football legend, known for his successful career both as a player and coach. As a player, Chukwu captained the Nigeria national team to its first victory in the African Nations Cup in 1980.

As a coach, he led Nigeria to the semifinals of the 2004 African Cup of Nations and also coached the Kenya national team.

However, Chukwu’s coaching career was not without controversy. He faced criticism for his management of the Nigerian national team during the 2006 World Cup qualification phase, and ultimately, Nigeria failed to qualify for the tournament after appearing in all World Cup finals tournaments since 1994.

Chukwu was also sacked from his position as coach of Enugu Rangers in 2009 for failing to meet the club’s targets for the season.

Despite these setbacks, Chukwu’s contributions to Nigerian football are undeniable. In 2019, the Nigeria Football Federation announced that they would help Chukwu pay for medical treatment in the United States, with billionaire Femi Otedola also contributing. Thankfully, after receiving the necessary treatment, Chukwu was cured and able to return home.
