The CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has revealed that starting the next week, Nigerians will be able to use their mobile phones and the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data code to conduct eNaira wallet transactions.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued the eNaira as legal tender, a digital currency supported by the law. It is the Naira’s currency in digital form.
Nigerians can open an eNaira wallet on any phone of their choosing using the designated USSD code in addition to transacting, according to Emefiele.
He states that all Nigerians will need to do to do transactions on their phones is call *997# from their phones.
In the same vein, The CBN Governor mentioned that since the debut of the e-Naira platform in October of last year, transactions on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) digital currency have reached N4 billion.
Mr. Godwin Emefiele, provided this status report during yesterday’s grand finale of the e-Naira Hackathon event in Abuja. He said: “Since the launch of this great initiative, the e-Naira has reached 840,000 downloads, with approximately 270,000 active wallets, consisting of over 252,000 consumer wallets and 17,000 merchant wallets.”
Emefiele revealed that despite the initiative’s accomplishments, the apex bank has begun the second phase of the e-Naira in partnership with private-sector players.
He continued by saying that the CBN maintains a strategic course for determining the Naira’s future by balancing innovation with monetary stability.
