Nordic ambassadors in Nigeria have underscored the need for international cooperation to tackle food security challenges. Speaking at the Nordic food feast hosted by Finnish Ambassador Sanna Selin, representatives from Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway emphasized innovative solutions and collaboration between the Nordic countries and Nigeria.
Danish Ambassador Jens Hansen highlighted the urgent need for sustainable food production, stating, “Our planet is already struggling. Therefore, we need to find new ways to sustainably increase food production while balancing its effects on the environment. We need cooperation between Nordic and African countries. We need technology, and we need innovative solutions.”
Finnish Ambassador Sanna Selin stressed the region’s commitment to environmental sustainability, saying, “In Nordic countries, environmental issues and animal welfare are our primary focus areas. The quantity of antibiotics administered to farm animals is among the lowest in Europe.” She also expressed optimism about more Finnish products entering the Nigerian market.
Swedish Ambassador Annika Hahn-Englund addressed Nigeria’s food security challenges despite its vast land, urging investments in climate-smart agriculture and infrastructure. “Despite Nigeria’s vast land, many people lack access to nutritious food. Nigeria imports most of its food, making it vulnerable to global shocks,” she said.
Norwegian Ambassador Svein Baera emphasized gender equality and dialogue as critical for development and prosperity.
