Today is the 35th memorial anniversary and patronal service of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the former premier of the defunct Western Region.
The service will begin at 2:00 pm at Obafemi Awolowo Memorial Anglican Church in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first premier of the Western Region, was born on March 6, 1909, and died on May 9, 1987.
He held the regional ministerial portfolios of local government, finance, and economic planning during his time as leader and premier. Additionally, he presided over the Regional Economic Planning Commission.
Awolowo was a nationalist and statesman who was instrumental in Nigeria’s independence movement and political growth.
Over three decades after his death, Awolowo’s influence and name continue to be referenced in Nigerian and international political and academic circles.
Most of his books and theories on solving the nation’s problems have been cited in various forums as potential solutions to some of the nation’s current crises.
Awolowo’s intellectual stances on restructuring, security, social justice, transparency, accountability, fairness, equity, selflessness, the rule of law, and the legitimacy of political, economic, and administrative authority have earned him a reputation for statesmanship and dedication to effective leadership and good governance.
