Following his goal against Fiorentina on Sunday, Victor Osimhen has surpassed all other Africans in Serie A to become the highest-scoring African.
The 1-0 victory became Napoli’s first league victory in 33 years, and the Nigerian outscored Liberian icon George Weah (who had 46 goals) by scoring his 47th Serie A goal.
Weah’s record has been in place since 1999.
Last Friday, the Nigerian player, 24, scored the equaliser to give his team its first Scudetto since 1990.
With his strike on Sunday, he now has 23 league goals this year. The Super Eagle is eager to become the first African to win the highest-scorer award in Italy, currently leading Argentina’s Lautaro Martinez by four goals. He has four games to accomplish that.
Speaking with DAZN after his win on Sunday, he said: “I think the curse is about to be broken, we still have four games to go and I want to get as many goals as possible while winning the games.”
