Rahila Mohammed: Newly Elected Vice Chairman of Kauru Local Government – A Career in Health, Leadership, and Community Advocacy

Rahila Mohammed, recently elected as Vice Chairman of Kauru Local Government Area, has a strong educational foundation and extensive expertise in health care. Her educational journey reflects a focus on health and community improvement, beginning with her First School Leaving Certificate from LEA Primary School in Badurum Kasa, Kauru L.G.A (1974-1980), and progressing to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) certificate from Government Day Secondary School, Tukuru-Tukurl (1982-1988). She trained as a Registered Midwife at the College of Nursing in Kafanchan (1994-1996) and furthered her credentials as a Registered Nurse at the same college (1996-1999). She then earned a Higher National Diploma in Public Health Nursing from Shehu Idris College of Health and Technology (2003-2005), followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (2014-2015) and a Master’s in Public Health from Maryam Abacha American University in Niger Republic (2016-2018).

In her recent role as Director of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) for Kubau Local Government (2018-2023), Rahila was instrumental in promoting sanitation, disease prevention, and community health awareness. Her initiatives significantly improved environmental hygiene and reduced disease outbreaks within the community. Previously, she served as Deputy Director of Disease Control (2017-2018), where she led responses to health crises, managed disease outbreaks, and offered technical support for malaria and other communicable diseases. Her professional experience includes earlier roles as a Ward Focal Person (2011-2016) with the rank of Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Principal Nursing Officer (2006-2011), Senior Nursing Sister (1999-2003), and Midwife (1996-1999).

Rahila’s leadership and advocacy are well recognized within the nursing and midwifery community. She has held several significant positions in the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), including Secretary (2000-2005), Chairman of the Local Government Nurses and Midwives Forum (2012-2015), and Treasurer of the Nursing Council Committee in Kaduna State (2014-2017). She continues to serve as the State Treasurer for NANNM Kaduna State (2017 to present) and was Vice Chairman of the Women’s Committee within the Nigeria Labour Workers Union in Kaduna State (2017-2021). Additionally, she holds the honorary title of Jaruma Chawai, a distinguished female title in Tsam Chawai Chiefdom, Kauru Local Government, which underscores her respected position in the community.

Rahila’s commitment to public service and political engagement is further exemplified by her involvement with the APC Professional Women Council, where she serves as the Coordinator for the Kaduna State Chapter. In this role, she advocates for women’s empowerment, aiming to amplify their representation and influence in public service and community leadership.
