Sanwo-Olu Unveils $150m Charterhouse Campus in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, officially unveiled the Charterhouse Lagos Primary School and performed the ground-breaking ceremony for its secondary school. The $150 million educational facility, located on Ogombo Road in Lekki, is set to provide world-class education in Lagos, marking a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to redefining academic excellence.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed pride in launching the first British independent school in Nigeria and West Africa.

“I am particularly proud that this is happening right here in Lagos, in Ogombo. Great things are happening in my state, and this occasion marks a transformative milestone in our journey to redefine educational excellence in Lagos and across our great nation,” he said.

The governor described Charterhouse Lagos as a bold fusion of British academic tradition and Nigerian cultural vitality. As a sister institution to Charterhouse United Kingdom, the Lagos campus embodies a legacy of excellence while introducing innovations tailored to the local context.

“By offering the British national curriculum alongside a robust Nigerian and African studies programme, Charterhouse ensures that our children are globally competitive yet deeply rooted in their heritage,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “This dual focus prepares them not only to thrive in universities worldwide but also to return home as leaders who will drive Nigeria’s future prosperity.”

The governor emphasised the significance of the project, noting that it addresses the long-standing trend of Nigerian families sending their children abroad for quality education.

“For decades, Nigerian families have faced the heart-wrenching reality of sending their children abroad for education. Today, Charterhouse Lagos disrupts that narrative. This $150 million campus, spanning 70 hectares in Ogombo, will provide world-class education right here in Lekki,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the school would not only keep families united but also invest tuition fees within the Nigerian economy. Additionally, it is expected to attract international families, reversing the trend of “japa” (emigration) and promoting “japada” (returning home).

“This is a resounding vote of confidence in Lagos State and a testament to our growing reputation as a hub of innovation and opportunity,” he added.

The newly commissioned primary and secondary schools boast state-of-the-art facilities designed to nurture talent and foster academic excellence. The campus features modern classrooms, advanced laboratories, sports complexes, and creative arts studios, among other amenities.

The event included a tour of the campus facilities, led by the Secretary to the State Government, who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, and the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, among other dignitaries.

The ceremony was also graced by the Ologombo of Ogombo Kingdom, Oba Abiodun Ogunbo, who commended the state government and Charterhouse for bringing world-class education to the community.

The unveiling of Charterhouse Lagos represents a significant step forward in Lagos State’s efforts to position itself as a centre of educational excellence. By providing world-class education locally, the project aims to empower the next generation of leaders and contribute to the state’s socio-economic development.

As Governor Sanwo-Olu aptly put it, “This is not just a school; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to what we can achieve when we dream big and work together.”
