Saudi Arabian Embassy and NIGCOMSAT to Launch Saudi TV Channels on Nigerian Satellite

The Saudi Arabian Embassy in Nigeria has initiated talks with Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) to host four Saudi television channels on the NigComSat-1R satellite. This partnership aims to expand broadcasting reach and promote cross-cultural media content between the two nations using cutting-edge satellite technology.

On Friday, Mohammed Alsahabi, Head of Media at the Saudi Arabian Embassy, visited NIGCOMSAT’s Ground Control Station, where he met with key officials. Abiodun Attah, Executive Director of Technical Services, represented the Managing Director and CEO, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, during the discussions. Both parties expressed optimism about the collaboration, which is expected to reshape media broadcasting across Nigeria and other African countries.

Aisha Bantam, Head of Corporate Affairs at NIGCOMSAT, released a statement following the meeting, highlighting the mutual goal to strengthen cultural ties between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. “Hosting Saudi Arabian channels on NigComSat-1R will enable the delivery of high-quality, culturally enriching programming to diverse audiences,” she said, noting that the collaboration will create broader access to diverse content and deepen connections between both countries.

For Saudi Arabia, the move aligns with its ambition to extend its media influence beyond its borders, particularly in regions with strong cultural ties like Africa. Alsahabi underscored the historical relationship between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, stating that the partnership could provide a unique platform for sharing valuable content that resonates with the values and interests of audiences in both nations.

NIGCOMSAT views this initiative as part of its broader strategy to be a leader in satellite communications in Africa. Abiodun Attah reiterated the organisation’s commitment to fostering international collaborations that promote connectivity and media diversity. “Our goal is to not only provide technical expertise but to also enhance cultural exchange through media,” he said.

With talks progressing, both parties are now working on finalising technical and operational details to launch the Saudi channels soon. The initiative is seen as a critical step towards increasing media options in Nigeria, giving viewers access to more diverse programming and setting the stage for future international broadcasting partnerships.
