The Teranga Lions of Senegal became the first among the African teams representing the continent in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, to record a victory after the 3-1 win over the host, Qatar on Friday.
Senegal were 2-0 ahead of Qatar after 60 minutes of the World Cup game that both teams desperately needed to win. Famara Diedhiou sent in a rocket header straight off a corner from Ismail Jakobs in the 48th minute to give Senegal its two-goal margin.
In the 41st minute, Qatar defender Boualem Khoukhi had badly bungled a clearance, the ball going nowhere. That gave Boulaye Dia a chance to sweep in and poach a fairly easy goal, Senegal’s first.
Qatar struggled to reply, failing to get a shot on target in the game so far as Senegal continued to dominate possession. Abdelkarim Hassan stuck his tongue out in frustration after firing a shot wide, a common sight for Qatar.
They threatened a comeback as their resilience paid off in the 77th minute with a header from Mohammed Muntari in what also became the hosts’ first-ever goal in the World Cup finals.
Senegal however, buried Qatar with the third goal for Senegal in the 83rd minute with a goal from Bamba Dieng.
