In preparation for the highly anticipated 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially revealed the provisional squad of the Super Eagles of Nigeria. This announcement was made through a statement posted on the CAF website on Wednesday.

Jose Peseiro, the coach of the Super Eagles, submitted the initial list, and he is expected to finalize the squad before the January 3 deadline set by CAF. Notably, the AFCON Organizing Committee has allowed all participating nations to expand their rosters from the traditional 23 players to 27, providing flexibility in team selection.

The AFCON squad for Nigeria is a diverse mix of talent, including three homegrown players: Obasogie Amas from Bendel Insurance, Christian Nwoke from Sporting Lagos FC, and Ojo Oluwasegun from Enyimba FC. This inclusion underscores the commitment to recognizing talent from the domestic league and providing a platform for emerging stars to shine on the continental stage.

According to the AFCON rules set by CAF, the registration of the additional four players on the final list is optional. However, any replacements can only occur in the case of a serious injury, and the switch must be made at least 24 hours before the team’s first match. The CAF Medical Committee must approve the medical certificate to validate the replacement.

The Super Eagles’ final AFCON squad boasts a mix of experienced players and rising stars. Notable names on the list include Francis Uzoho, Ahmed Musa, Victor Osimhen, and William Ekong. The team is set to compete in the prestigious tournament, which will run from January 13 to February 11, 2024, across various Ivorian cities, including Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.
