McLaren junior driver Ugo Ugochukwu delivered a masterclass at the Macau Grand Prix on Sunday, claiming victory in a race marked by a red flag and five safety car periods.
The 17-year-old Nigerian-American showcased exceptional form throughout the weekend, starting with the fastest qualifying time on Friday, which earned him pole position for Saturday’s qualifying race. Ugochukwu dominated that event, setting the stage for his commanding performance in Sunday’s finale.
“Of course, the goal was to come in and win, but to be P1 since Friday is just great – I was definitely not expecting it,” Ugochukwu shared. “To actually get the job done and win the main race, which is the most important, was a great feeling.”
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown also celebrated Ugochukwu’s achievement, highlighting its historical significance. “Excellent skill and determination to navigate a tricky race. We’re proud!” Brown posted on Instagram. “Ugo picks up the trophy previously won by legends like Senna and Schumacher and is the first American to win it in over 40 years! Mega!”
