A recent report by mobile intelligence firm Apptopia shows a significant shift in the mobile ecosystem in 2022, as users continue to favor video editing apps and e-commerce platforms for their mobile devices.
The top four most-downloaded apps globally for 2022 were TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and CapCut, a video editing software made by the parent company of TikTok that has become a popular tool among influencers. Facebook saw a drop of more than 25% in app installs, while WhatsApp, a messaging app, continued its growth both globally and in the United States, despite being owned by Facebook’s parent company, Meta.
Here’s the top 10 most-downloaded apps globally:
TikTok: 672 million
Instagram: 548 million
WhatsApp: 424 million
CapCut: 357 million
Snapchat: 330 million
Telegram: 310 million
Subway Surfers: 304 million
Facebook: 298 million
Stumble Guys: 254 million
Spotify: 238 million
In terms of e-commerce, SHEIN was the most-downloaded shopping app globally with 229 million installs, a significant increase from last year. Wish, a popular shopping app, dropped off the list entirely. In the United States, Amazon was the most-downloaded shopping app with 47 million downloads, followed by SHEIN with 40 million installs. A new entrant from a Chinese company, Pinduoduo, also made the U.S. list at number eight, with 16.5 million installs, after being available for less than half a year.

Games also saw a significant presence in the top 10 most-downloaded apps, with Subway Surfers and Stumble Guys making the list. Interestingly, several of the top games are quite old, with two games in the top 10 being over a decade old: Subway Surfers and Candy Crush Saga.
The top 10 most download games globally:

It’s important to note that while these apps may have the most installs, they don’t necessarily earn the most revenue. Some of the biggest revenue earners, like Clash of Clans, were not present on the list. According to Apptopia’s Adam Blacker, these shifts in the mobile ecosystem indicate a change in where and how people are spending their time on mobile devices.
