Türkiye and Somalia have signed a landmark memorandum for joint hydrocarbon exploration. The agreement, announced by Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, positions both nations as emerging partners in a critical sector poised for substantial economic and geopolitical impact.
The collaboration involves Türkiye’s state-owned Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and Somalia’s Petroleum Authority. Under the terms of the memorandum, both parties will engage in onshore oil and gas exploration activities across Somali land fields. The deal was finalized during the Somali Defence Minister’s visit to Ankara, where broader discussions on defence and economic collaboration further solidified the bilateral relationship.

These sites, spanning approximately 5,000 square kilometres, are expected to unlock untapped hydrocarbon reserves.
