UBA Appoints First Female CEO for Africa Operations

The United Bank for Africa Plc’s board of directors has named Mrs. Abiola Bawuah as the organization’s chief executive officer.

Bawuah would supervise the Group’s activities outside of Nigeria on the African continent as an executive director on the group board, the bank announced in a statement on Monday.

Beyond Nigeria, UBA has operations in 19 other African nations in addition to its worldwide hubs in New York, London, Paris, and the UAE.

The Group Board Chairman, Mr. Tony Elumelu, commented on the new appointment as follows: “Abiola has contributed significantly to the growth of UBA Africa for close to a decade.

“She brings a wealth of experience in commercial banking, and stakeholder engagement.  It also gives me great pleasure that with her appointment, the UBA Group board has now become a majority female board.”

Bawua, a citizen of Ghana, became the first female CEO of UBA Africa. According to the announcement, her selection further exemplifies UBA’s dedication to diversity.

In her previous role, Bawuah oversaw operations in nine subsidiaries of the Group, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. She was also the regional CEO for West Africa.

Other appointments announced by the group:

UBA West Africa’s new regional CEO is Chris Ofikulu. Ofikulu has more than 20 years of financial expertise in retail, corporate, and commercial banking.

Upon receiving permission from local regulatory bodies, Uzoechina Molokwu will assume the position of deputy managing director for UBA Ghana. He has over 23 years of banking expertise and was previously the executive director of business development at UBA Côte d’Ivoire.

Subject to local regulatory permissions, Ayokunle Olajubu will serve as managing director and CEO of UBA Liberia. He currently oversees compliance for all African subsidiaries and has thirty years of banking expertise in Nigeria and other African nations like Sierra Leone, Cote D’Ivoire, and the Gambia.

Subject to regional regulatory permissions, Theresa Henshaw was chosen to lead UBA UK. She joined the Group as the ED, Business Development at UBA UK after serving as the DMD, Business Development, UBA America.

Subject to regional regulatory approvals, Usman Isiaka, who is the CEO of UBA Sierra Leone, would serve as the deputy CEO of UBA America.

The current group treasurer is Adeyemi Adeleke, a former CEO of UBA, UK. By utilizing the Group’s presence in 24 countries within and outside of Africa, Adeleke would be striving to unlock the enormous value in the Group’s multi-jurisdictional balance sheet.
