Villarreal were defeated 3-2 by Liverpool in their second leg semi-final match in the Champions League on Wednesday night, May 3, 2022 at El Madrigal.

After losing 2-0 in the first leg at Anfield, the yellow submarines got off to a perfect start when Senegalese forward Boulaye Dia scored three minutes into the game to give Villarreal an early 1-0 lead.

Unai Emery’s men were soon on fairytale island after Francis Coquelin added a second in the 41st minute to put Villarreal right back in the game and take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Reds came roaring back in the second half after Villarreal goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli made a howler that allowed Fabinho to find the back of the net in the 62nd minute.

Villarreal’s lead over Liverpool was doubled by Francis Coquelin.

Luiz Diaz, a second-half substitute, equalized five minutes later, heading past Rulli off a cross from Trent Alexander Arnold to make the score 2-2.

Liverpool’s second goal was scored by Luiz Diaz.

Liverpool’s aggregate lead was extended after Rulli committed yet another gaffe and was caught in no man’s land, before Senegalese winger Sadio Mane scored in the 74th minute to complete the comeback and condemn Unai Emery’s win to a third defeat in seven days.

On Tuesday night, Sadio Mane scored the game-winning goal for Liverpool against Villarreal.

Liverpool’s victory advanced them to the Champions League finals in Paris, where they will face either Manchester City or Real Madrid, who play their second leg semi-final match on Wednesday.
