At a recent UN Security Council meeting, UK Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador James Kariuki, emphasized the significance of continued cooperation between the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) in addressing conflicts across Africa.
“The UK welcomes the African Union’s leadership in championing multilateralism and supporting stability and prosperity across Africa,” said Kariuki. He praised the AU for placing women and youth at the center of peace efforts and reaffirmed the UK’s support for African leadership in global peace initiatives.
Ambassador Kariuki also underscored the importance of the UN-AU partnership in Somalia, particularly through the ATMIS mission, saying, “It is imperative that the final mission is financially viable and deliverable, and that it supports Somalia’s efforts to eventually assume full responsibility for, and ownership of, its security.”
Kariuki concluded by stressing the need for close collaboration, particularly in implementing Resolution 2719. He noted, “Sustained close collaboration between the UN and the AU will be essential to ensure 2719’s success.”
The UK looks forward to continued collaboration between the UN and AU to help “silence the guns” and address Africa’s most pressing challenges.
