The University of Lagos (UNILAG) men’s basketball team secured a hard-fought victory over Nile University on Tuesday, winning 51-46 in a gripping Match Day 3 at the UNILAG Sports Centre, Akoka. This win marked a strong comeback for UNILAG after their previous defeat on Match Day 2.

The game, however, was no easy feat for the UNILAG team. Nile University dominated the first two quarters, leading 15-12 in the first quarter and extending their lead to 28-24 by halftime. Despite the early setback, UNILAG mounted an impressive comeback in the final quarter, clinching the win through a series of free throws.

Reflecting on the victory, UNILAG player Akintoye Duro-Ladipo said, “I think coming from yesterday’s loss, we knew that we had to win today because we had a chance of making it to the semifinals. I guess everybody plans to win at the end of the game, but the better team won—that is what I would say.”

Teammate Somto Olaker admitted that the team started slow but gained momentum as the game progressed. “At first, we were playing with low spirits in the first quarter, but later we started warming up. The game was not as good as I wanted it to be, but it was well enough,” he remarked.

Another player, Ahmed Olusoji, highlighted the team’s resilience, stating, “We were exhausted, but we just kept going and didn’t want to give up. Obviously, we will keep coming with the energy; we are not scared of anyone.”

UNILAG’s victory keeps their hopes alive as they look forward to the possibility of meeting Nile University again in the semifinals.
