In a dazzling world premiere event held at Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX Lekki in Lagos, Nigeria, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African Entertainment Company Kugali unveiled their groundbreaking series, “Iwájú.”
The premiere took place ahead of the Disney+ launch of all six episodes scheduled for today.Filmmakers, including director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, cultural consultant Tolu Olowofoyeku, and composer Ré Olunuga, graced the event alongside special industry guests and celebrities.
The voice cast members, such as Ireti Doyle, Chioma ‘Chigul’ Omeruah, Kehinde Bankole, Bisola Aiyeola, Femi Branch, Simisola Gbadamosi, Toyin Oshinaike, and Obi Maduegbuna, also attended the premiere.Set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, “Iwájú” is an exhilarating coming-of-age story following Tola (Simisola Gbadamosi), a young girl from the affluent island, and her best friend Kole (Siji Soetan), a self-taught tech expert.
The series unravels the secrets and dangers hidden in their distinct worlds.Kugali’s filmmakers guide viewers through a unique journey into the world of “Iwájú,” characterized by distinctive visual elements and technological advancements inspired by the vibrant spirit of Lagos.
Produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson, “Iwájú” features the voices of Dayo Okeniyi, Shaffy Bello, and Weruche Opia.While the series is set to launch on Disney+ today, African audiences can catch “Iwájú” on Disney Channel, distributed on the DStv platform (Channel 303), starting this April and May. This broadcast will provide an opportunity for viewers across the continent to experience the series in regions where Disney+ is not available.
