Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, has joined the Labour Party, LP, after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over issues he described as being at odds with his character and principles.
A large crowd gathered outside the party office in Agulu Ward 2 to witness Obi’s registration.
Yesterday, Senate Minority Whip, Sen. Eyinnaya Abaribe, a former PDP governorship candidate who had been cheated out of the Abia State governorship primary by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), resigned from his position as Senate Minority Leader.
As soon as Obi received the party’s card, he issued a statement titled “The Road to Recovery” in which he thanked Nigerians for their support.
Statement: “I thank everyone who has joined me in the mission to rescue and retake Nigeria, especially our youth.” You and your children will benefit from this endeavor. I am merely a conduit.
Following my departure from the PDP, I have consulted widely with various parties and personalittor to ensure that the path to our desired destination does not become more complicated.”
“For me, the process of getting into this high office is as fundamental as what one willafterwardards,” he says. Because of this, I have chosen the Labour Party, which stands for the people, workers, development, production, security, and uniting Nigerians into a single-family as a path free of rancor and in line with my mantra.
Nigerians, join me in reclaiming our country. We can do this.” Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
“I’m not desperate to be president,” Peter Obi said in an interview with Channels Television last night. “I want Nigeria to succeed, especially for the country’s young people.”
Older Igbo men: Okupe back in action
In response to Obi’s decision, Igbo elders an.d Dr. Doyin Okupe, his ally, cheered. They have 25 million Nigerians in a growing coalition against the APC and PDP in the 2023 general elections.
“I can confirm to you that he (Obi) has joined the Labour Party,” Okupe said. We plan to form a coalition with the help of the Labour Party. More than 25 million Nigerians have already signed on to this coalition.
We’re also assembling other parties to join this alliance. In addition, we are forming a larger coalition than both the PDP and the APC.
In opposition to the APC and the PDP, a seven-party coalition
Six allied political parties and the National Consultative Frofrontront, the umbrella organization of the Third Force Movement, agreed last week to join forces with the Labour Party, LP, to put forward a joint presidential and other candidates for the 2023 elections.
Last week, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, formally revalidated their membership in the Labour Party by formally registering with the party. This adoption of the Labour Party was made possible because of the new reconciliation between the leadership of the Labour Movement and the hierarchy of the Labour Party.
Prof. Attahiru Jega of the People’s Redemption Party, PRP, Professor Pat Utomi of the Labour Party, and Senator Saidu Dansadau of the National Rescue Movement, NRM are all leaders of the ‘Third Force’ Movement. The African Democratic Congress (ADC), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) are all members of the coalition.
