President Bola Tinubu has touched down in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, gearing up for the eagerly anticipated COP28 Climate Summit. The summit, officially known as the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP28, carries the theme “Unite, Act, and Deliver” and is slated to unfold from December 1-2.

President Tinubu’s departure from Abuja on Wednesday, flanked by senior government officials, signifies Nigeria’s active participation in the international effort to combat climate change. The summit provides a crucial platform for global leaders to strategize and make impactful decisions regarding climate-related challenges.

Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale emphasized that President Tinubu’s focus will extend beyond rhetoric. His agenda includes advocating for increased financial and technical support for developing nations. Notably, he will remind developed countries of their commitment to providing $100 billion annually to aid localized initiatives tackling climate change.

Central to Nigeria’s representation at the summit is President Tinubu’s role in delivering a national statement. This statement will articulate Nigeria’s stance on pivotal issues, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy and climate financing. As a nation straddling economic development and environmental concerns, Nigeria’s voice at COP28 carries weight in shaping global climate policies.

Beyond the formal summit proceedings, President Tinubu will engage in sideline activities aimed at fostering foreign direct investment. These efforts align with his commitment to bolster wealth creation and revenue expansion in Nigeria. The President is anticipated to participate in events hosted by the Nigerian delegation, strategically leveraging these occasions to draw attention to investment opportunities within the country.

Yesterday’s announcement to the National Assembly during the 2024 budget presentation underscored President Tinubu’s proactive approach. The assurance that the Nigerian delegation will seek tangible commitments for advancing Nigeria’s energy transition further cements the nation’s dedication to sustainable practices and economic growth.
