Nigeria claimed multiple prestigious awards at the 2023 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards ceremony. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone, notably with a Nigerian player securing the African Player of the Year title for the first time in 24 years.

Victor, the Napolian prince, emerged as the African Player of the Year, breaking a long-standing drought for Nigeria in this category. The last Nigerian to achieve this feat was Papillo Nwankwo Kanu in 1999. The football community celebrated this triumph, acknowledging Victor’s exceptional skills and contributions to the sport.

Meanwhile, the indomitable Asisat Oshoala, continued to etch her name in football history. Oshoala secured the Women’s Player of the Year award for the remarkable sixth time, extending her dominance for five consecutive years. This outstanding feat solidifies her status as a football icon and a source of pride for Nigeria.

In the women’s category, Nnadozie Chiamaka, an outstanding goalkeeper, received the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award. Additionally, the collective prowess of the Super Falcons was acknowledged as they were named the 2023 National Team of the Year (Women). This recognition underlines Nigeria’s continued commitment to excellence in women’s football.

Lamine Camara’s exceptional talent did not go unnoticed as he clinched the 2023 Men’s Young Player of the Year award, signifying a promising future for the young athlete.

In the young women’s category, Nesryne El Chad emerged victorious in the race for the 2023 CAF Young Player of the Year, triumphing over formidable contenders Deborah Abiodun from Nigeria and Comfort Yeboah from Ghana. This showcases the rising stars in African women’s football.

Adding another feather to Nigeria’s cap, the CAF 2023 Women’s National Team of the Year award went to the Super Falcons, highlighting their consistent excellence and dominance in the continental arena.

Beyond individual accolades, club football also saw recognition at the CAF Awards. Al Ahly FC from Egypt claimed the prestigious title of the 2023 CAF Club of the Year (Men), underscoring their exceptional performance and contributions to African football.

The Women’s Interclub Player of the Year award was bestowed upon Fatima Tagnaout of ASFAR, emphasizing the outstanding individual talents that enrich the fabric of women’s football in Africa.
