In the midst of Everton’s FA Cup match against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Alex Iwobi was stretchered off the field after suffering a terrible ankle injury. He now appears to be in for a protracted period of time on the sidelines.
With a 3-1 victory over the Toffees, the Red Devils moved through to the competition’s fourth round.
In the 47th minute, a vicious attack by Tyrell Malacia caused ex-Arsenal star Iwobi, 26, to roll his ankle. The Toffees midfielder covered his face as he walked off the field, clearly upset and in discomfort.
Seamus Coleman, the captain of Everton, quickly requested that the midfielder be attended to by doctors.
Speaking with BBC Radio, Alan Stubbs said, “Alex Iwobi has just gone over on his ankle and the ankle has gone inside.”
“I’m hoping he hasn’t done his ankle ligaments because it looks like that. The momentum of the challenge from Malacia has rocked his ankle. It’ll either be one where he has jarred it and is fine to carry on or he won’t be able to continue and could be out for a few weeks.”
Iwobi was replaced by Abdoulaye Doucoure after receiving care on the pitch, and the visiting Evertonian supporters gave him a standing ovation.
