The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the implementation of free train services on all its passenger routes starting from Thursday, December 21, 2023, until Thursday, January 4, 2024. This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a 50 percent reduction in interstate bus prices to ease the financial strain on citizens during the festive season.

In an official statement released by the NRC, passengers are instructed to secure their free tickets exclusively through the online e-ticketing platforms. Notably, tickets will not be issued at any of the corporation’s train stations, emphasizing the digital nature of the booking process. The statement further emphasizes that strict adherence to this protocol is paramount, as no commuter will be permitted to board the train without a valid ticket.

The NRC urges passengers to maintain orderliness, comply with security personnel directives, and adhere to the boarding instructions provided by both the NRC and its officials at the stations and on board the trains. The corporation expresses warm holiday wishes to all its esteemed customers, extending a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance.

This bold move by the NRC aims to alleviate the financial burden associated with holiday travel, ensuring that Nigerians can reunite with their families and loved ones without the added strain of high transportation costs. The initiative follows the government’s broader efforts to enhance accessibility and affordability in the public transportation sector during the festive period.

Earlier, Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, shared insights into the government’s motivation for such interventions. President Tinubu’s vision is to enable Nigerians to travel freely within the country, fostering connections with loved ones without the hindrance of exorbitant inter-state transportation fees. As part of this intervention, from Thursday onwards, citizens can enjoy a 50 percent reduction in fares for inter-state buses and minibuses.

This comprehensive approach by the government, covering both rail and road travel, demonstrates a commitment to fostering unity, familial ties, and the joy of the season among citizens.
