Nigeria’s Minister Nyesom Wike has approved the allocation of N13.1 billion for critical infrastructure projects across secondary and primary schools in the Six Area Councils for the fiscal year 2024. This announcement, made by Dr. Danlami Hayyo, the Mandate Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration Education Secretariat, underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector.

The approved funds will be earmarked for the renovation of existing structures, construction of new facilities, provision of essential furniture, and the development of much-needed toilet facilities in schools. Dr. Hayyo, during an end-of-year media briefing in Abuja, outlined that the allocation will be distributed among the area councils based on the specific project needs of each, ensuring a targeted and equitable approach.

Highlighting Minister Wike’s dedication to these educational initiatives, Dr. Hayyo emphasized the comprehensive nature of the approved projects. “The minister of FCT, who has been described as Mr. Project, approves new constructions, renovations or rehabilitation, the provision of furniture, and the construction of toilets in FCT secondary and primary schools to the tune of over N13 billion,” he announced.

The allocation strategy takes into account the diverse needs of each area council, recognizing variations in demand arising from factors such as dilapidated infrastructure and congested classrooms. This approach aims to address the unique challenges faced by schools in different regions of the FCT.

In addition to the capital investment in infrastructure, Dr. Hayyo shed light on various training initiatives conducted by the Education Secretariat throughout the year. These initiatives included staff training programs in London, covering topics such as British Education Training Technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, e-library skills, computer-based testing, and online training for English teachers facilitated by the British Council.

Dr. Hayyo acknowledged the challenges faced by staff members but urged them to remain resolute in their commitment to achieving positive results. The move to invest in both infrastructure and human capital development reflects the FCT’s dedication to providing a conducive and enriching learning environment for students, setting the stage for improved educational outcomes and opportunities in the region.
