In a historic moment for regional integration, the Federal Republic of Somalia has officially become the eighth member of the East African Community (EAC). The admission process was completed during a brief ceremony held at the EAC headquarters in Arusha on March 4, 2023.
A Milestone for Somalia
Somalia, with its longest coastline of over 3,000 kilometers in Africa, now joins the ranks of EAC member states, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. This significant milestone reflects Somalia’s commitment to regional cooperation and economic development.
The Instrument of Ratification
During the ceremony, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, presented the instrument of ratification of the treaty of accession to EAC Secretary-General Peter Mathuki. This formal step solidified Somalia’s full membership status within the community.

Mr. Abdi emphasized Somalia’s eagerness to contribute to EAC integration. Leveraging its strategic location and abundant national resources, Somalia aims to enhance collaboration with neighboring countries. The country is committed to promoting regional economic growth through increased trade, bilateral agreements, and joint programs and projects.
Next Steps
As a new member, Somalia has specific responsibilities to fulfill:
Designate a ministry and appoint a minister to coordinate EAC matters.
Elect nine members of Parliament to the East African Legislative Assembly (Eala).
Appoint a judge to sit in the First Instance Division of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ).
