Starlink, the satellite internet company under SpaceX, has established its first physical office on the continent in Nairobi, Kenya. This decision comes on the heels of Starlink launching its services in Nigeria, marking its foray into the African market.
SpaceX recently advertised a job opening for the role of Global Licensing Activation Manager, sub-Saharan Africa, emphasizing its commitment to navigate the regulatory landscape of the region effectively. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in securing licensing for Starlink as an Internet service provider across a portfolio of countries. This move is seen as a calculated step to facilitate the expansion of Starlink’s services to more regions, targeting both individual consumers and enterprises on a global scale.
The job position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, with the incumbent reporting to the team situated at Starlink’s MacGregor, TX location. The choice of Nairobi as the base for the first physical office in Africa underscores Kenya’s strategic importance as a hub for technology and innovation on the continent.
Starlink, in a tweet from January, had announced its entry into the African market with Nigeria as its pioneering country. The tweet stated, “Starlink is now available in Nigeria, the first African country to receive service.” Subsequently, the satellite internet company expanded its services to include other African nations such as Kenya, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, and Eswatini.
This move is expected to have a substantial impact on the accessibility and availability of high-speed internet in these regions, addressing connectivity challenges and potentially fostering economic and technological growth.
