Bonang Matheba: Bold, Powerful, and Unapologetic

Bonang Dorothy Matheba was born on June 25, 1987, in the Mahikeng neighbourhood of North West, to Gampi Matheba, a senior lecturer at North-West University, and Charlotte Mokoena, the executive vice president for human resources and corporate affairs of Sasol. She is Tswana, a member of the Bantu language family.

Matheba is a well-known South African actress, radio host, television presenter, and social media influencer. She is renowned for her classy presentation style and distinctive voice. She hosted the SABC 1 music programme LIVE (now Live Amp), which helped her gain notoriety in the field. She is renowned for becoming the first Black South African to appear in various periodicals.

She launched the first South African celebrity-run online reality programme, B*Dazzled, in 2011. She served as the cosmetic company Revlon’s first non-American international ambassador in 2013.

She became the first South African to host the pre-ceremony in 2014 when she hosted the pre-show for the MTV Europe Music Awards. She received the first African E! News Special Africa on E! in 2015. Matheba is quite influential and loved by many. She is has more than 5 million followers on her Instagram and Twitter accounts.

She was on the front cover of Forbes Woman Africa in 2016 together with three other women who were each referred to as the “Faces of Entrepreneurship.” In 2017, she both launched her reality television series Being Bonang and published her book From A to B. She was highlighted in GQ South Africa’s September 2018 power issue.

Matheba made her television debut in 2002 when she was 15 years old on the SABC 2 children’s programme Manhattan Fantasy Challenge. She further made appearances in other SABC 2 kids programmes. After graduating from varsity, Matheba went on the SABC 1 music programme LIVE (now Live Amp)’s open call in 2007 for its first season. She later became the show’s winner and joined Tbo Touch as co-host. The nickname “Queen B” was given to her as a result of her enormous success in her presenting roles. As she announced her departure from the show, her farewell episode was broadcast on August 31, 2012. Following her departure from LIVE, she hosted a number of other programmes, including KFC Taste Kitchen, Afternoon Express, Clash of the Choirs SA, and Afternoon Express.

MTV Africa Music Awards 2016, Miss South Africa 2018, the pre-shows for the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards, and the BET Awards 2016 are just a few of the notable occasions Matheba has hosted. Alongside comedian Trevor Noah, supermodel Naomi Campbell, and other prominent public figures, Matheba served as co-host of the Global Citizen: Mandela 100 performance on December 2, 2018.
