Abia State’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, has announced that the modular refinery at the Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP) is scheduled to commence operations in 2025. This revelation, made during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, marks a pivotal milestone for the state’s economic landscape.

Kanu highlighted that the modular refinery, slated to be the flagship project at the innovation park, is on track to become fully operational within the next year. This strategic initiative is expected to play a crucial role in reshaping Abia State’s economic future.

The commissioner emphasized the substantial impact the refinery is poised to have on employment, revealing that approximately 2,000 direct jobs and a multitude of indirect job opportunities will be created for the youth of Abia. This move aligns with broader efforts to address unemployment challenges in the state.

“The project will help to provide refined products for the people of Abia as well as increase our revenue base as a state. So, it is a project that is very important to this government, and every effort is being put in place to ensure that the date is met,” stated Kanu.

In addition to fostering employment, the modular refinery is anticipated to contribute significantly to the state’s revenue generation. Kanu underscored the government’s commitment to leveraging the petroleum and mineral resources within Abia, signaling a proactive stance towards economic diversification and sustainability.

Highlighting the growing interest from investors, especially in the petroleum sector, Kanu emphasized that the project would not only strengthen the state’s economic foundation but also attract further investments. This aligns with the broader vision to position Abia as an attractive destination for business ventures and contribute to the overall economic growth of the region.
