Nollywood filmmaker Michael Onuoha’s latest work, ‘Galatians,’ has been selected to be developed at this year’s La Fabrique Cinema du Monde, which takes place at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The drama, which is based on Onuoha’s award-winning short film “Rehearsal,” offers a compelling look into the world of Pentecostalism, exploring the blurred lines between miracle churches and theater.
This year marks the first time a Nigerian project has been selected to feature at the development workshop. ‘Galatians’ is one of the ten films chosen from the global south, and both the director and producer, Michael Onuoha and Abba T. Makama, respectively, have been invited to the workshop.
Speaking on the selection, Onuoha revealed that when the script was nearing completion last year, it became his top priority to get it into a lab of some kind, and La Fabrique Cinema was his first choice. He expressed his delight that the project was accepted and that it is a huge honor to be one of the ten projects on the program.
La Fabrique Cinema is a film support program that is unique in the world, providing a veritable springboard for emerging talents from the South and developing countries. This year’s 15th edition, which runs from May 17 to 26, will feature a diverse range of works from other African countries like Senegal, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Egypt.
Onuoha’s selection for the prestigious program is a testament to the growing recognition of Nigerian cinema on the world stage, as the industry continues to produce compelling works that showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage and diverse talent pool. ‘Galatians’ is poised to make a significant impact when it is developed at La Fabrique Cinema, as it further solidifies Onuoha’s position as one of the industry’s leading voices.
